Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1–2 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well after each addition; stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth out the top. Bake for 22–25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While cooling, make the glaze: Melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown; remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and adjust consistency with milk if necessary.
  7. Once cooled, pour glaze over the bars before slicing.
