  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • For the filling: 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • For the frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, granulated sugar, and yeast. Let sit until bubbly.
  2. Add flour, cocoa powder, salt, softened butter, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl to rise for about 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick and spread the filling evenly over it.
  6. Roll up tightly into a log; cut into 12 equal pieces and place in a greased baking dish.
  7. Let rise again for about 30 minutes; bake at 350°F for approximately 25 minutes.
  8. Prepare the cream cheese frosting while baking by beating together softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  9. Allow rolls to cool slightly before frosting.
